PRESENCE: EGYPTOLOGY

Writer's picture: Ralph BurtonRalph Burton

As someone who always had a fascination with Ancient Egypt and culture that, in many ways, seemed to glorify death and royalty (not too far from Blighty, then) and its love of cats, of course, this can be seen in many of my books. To list a few, The Pixies and The Falls have the strongest Ancient Egyptian vibes, quite literally containing Egyptian settings and iconography. This sense of going deep into a cavern and uncovering an ancient, morbid world has always interested me, and it rubs off well with my love of Lovecraft. What is the famed story of Howard Carter uttering "wonderful things?" than the Wizard of Oz writ large on real life? The scenes in which George and Freddy go deep into Starkweather's complex and encounter his toys have a strong sense of Egyptology; this venture down into a tomb and an encounter with a death curse.
