My visit to L.A. for the first time in real-life pleasingly opened my eyes to a city that was very much the one I had written about in my book, this nocturnal Doors-Jim-Morrison town with a little bit of Fitzgerald thrown in. It's a beautiful city, of course. What compelled me this time was the amount of dark things I saw, ones which reminded me of the hidden U.S (or rather, the dark side of history) such as the nasty, provocative art in the LACMA Modern Art Museum or the sobering Holocaust museum which consists of little more than three hallways but in which it is possible to spend hours in out of respect for the Six Million. Even in the Academy museum, there was a replica of an Electric chair. I toured the U.S. this time with my eyes wide open.
