An article appeared in The Guardian recently detailed Sean Penn's film about President Zelenskyy. While Penn comes in for a lot of criticism from both liberal and conservative quarters, often perceived as arrogant, I think people don't give him credit for how he has always had a good heart and been on the right side of history. Look at how he went to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I'll write another post on my support for Ukraine, but I do feel that Penn is underrated in that he always does the right thing.
I'm not going to comment on his fiction work, even though I'm a writer. As a former film studies student, I'd like to discuss my favourite performance of Penn's, that of Dave Klein in Carlito's Way. While this could have been a smarmy character, Penn makes him sympathetic and disappears completely in the role.
